Aldew Town (Japanese: グリーンリー Gurīnrī Town) is a town in the southeastern portion of the Rinto region. It is located between Route 1 to the south and Route 2 to the north, and connects to Littleleaf Lake in the west. Professor Redwood's laboratory is located here.

GeographyEdit

Aldew Town is situated in the center of a heavily forested area, being surrounded by many large trees that provide habitats for wild Pokémon. Being very overgrown, it is one of the few settlements in the core series Pokémon games in which tall grass can be found. It has varied terrain, consisting of many small ponds, rivers, slopes, and groves. As a result of its close proximity to the both the estuary of the River Thane and Littleleaf Lake, the town is also prone to flooding, though this never happens in game, with the last dated flood occurring roughly 100 years before the events of Pokémon Sunrise and Sunset. Many of the houses and buildings, including the Pokémon Center and Professor Redwood's laboratory, are made out of locally produced lumber.

DemographicsEdit

Aldew Town has a population of ?? making it the ???est town in Rinto, and the ???est settlement in Rinto overall. Many residents enjoy living in it due to its closeness to nature, as well as the security and protection that the Aldew Police provide. The majority of the townsfolk work as woodcutters for the paper mill or as assistants in Professor Redwood's laboratory.

ClimateEdit

Like many other areas in south and east Rinto, Aldew Town has a temperate climate. There is a chance of rain, wind and clouds in all four seasons, with slight chances of heavy rain in spring and autumn, intense sunlight in summer, falling leaves in autumn, hail in autumn and winter, and snow in winter.

HistoryEdit

Aldew Town was founded by migrants from Minton Town around 400 years before the events of Pokémon Sunrise and Sunset, who left their original home in order to search for a place with more available land and materials. The town's original name was Verdelia Village, though it was renamed Haymoore Town roughly 100 years later as its population increased. The town was frequently visited by a medieval queen, who was most likely one of the many queens of East Rinto. The town gained its current name approximately 100 years before the events of Pokémon Sunrise and Sunset after it was destroyed by a flood and subsequently rebuilt. It was around this time that the Aldew Police were founded, who soon constructed the Aldew Police Station so that they would be prepared for any later disasters. The most recent addition to the town was Professor Redwood's laboratory, which was constructed by Professor Redwood's father around 30 years before the events of Pokémon Sunrise and Sunset. Aldew Town and its surrounding areas remained completely untouched by the Elite Council during the Second Dawn, who saw it as too small and insignificant to be of use.

Contemporary historyEdit

Spoiler warning: this article or section may contain major plot or ending details.

Pokémon Sunrise and SunsetEdit

The player first visits Aldew Town after they have graduated from the Trainer Academy, obtained their starter Pokémon, and returned to Minton Town. They visit Professor Redwood's laboratory to tell him about their plans to locate the Bandit Squad and retrieve the stolen Pokémon. There, they also bump into Selina, who gives them a Pokédex and has a quick battle with them to test their potential. Professor Redwood recommends that the player pays a visit to Bertie, a Berry farmer who lives on Route 2, who may be able to help them on their journey. If the player tries to leave the town for Littleleaf Lake, they will be stopped by Selina, who questions why they haven't been to see Bertie yet.

After the player meets Bertie and defeats Shadrick and Kyra on Route 2, they travel back through Aldew Town to reach Littleleaf Lake, which eventually takes them to Capeta City, the home of the Capeta Gym. The player visits Aldew Town a final time after they discover the locked door on the roof of the Twilit Pillar. They return to the Aldew Police Station with the Bug Statuette, Tesla CoilSr/Shadow StoneSs, or Detonator in order to obtain fingerprints of Bardo, Brisa, or Blaise, respectively.

Places of interestEdit

Professor Redwood's laboratoryEdit

Professor Redwood's laboratory lies in the northwestern portion of the town. It is a relatively large building consisting of two floors, one where research takes place, and one where Professor Redwood's office is located. There is also a small garden behind the lab that can be accessed through the door at the back. Here, the player can encounter wild Pokémon and grow berries in the loamy soil. The player can also choose to participate in an optional capture tutorial with Selina here if they wish.

When the player first visits the lab after graduating from the Trainer Academy and obtaining their starter Pokémon, Professor Redwood will be waiting for them in his office on the upper level. He asks them what they are planning on doing now that they have a Pokémon, and is shocked when he finds out that they want to track down the Pokémon stolen by the Bandit Squad. He suggests that the player visits the nearby Capeta Gym and ask for the help of the Gym Leader there, Beatrice, as tracking down the Bandit Squad alone would be a dangerous task for a beginning Trainer.

After this conversation, Selina enters the room. She introduces herself to the player, before telling Professor Redwood that she was sent by her mother, Professor Spruce, to deliver something to him. Confused, the Professor opens the parcel to find two Pokédexes. He quickly remembers that he asked Professor Spruce to deliver them so that he could give them to the player and AmeliaM/CameronF. He gives the player both of them and asks them to give one to AmeliaM/CameronF the next time they meet. Finally, after a few parting words, he suggests that the player visits Route 2 and speaks to Bertie, who will most likely have something to make their journey easier.

As the player is about to leave the lab, Selina will walk up to them and ask them to battle her, healing their Pokémon for them first. Following the battle, she explains that the Pokédex the player has is a fairly recent model, and she recently got one too. She also tells them that she graduated from the Trainer Academy three years ago, but has only just started her quest to become stronger and complete the Pokédex now that its software has been debugged by Professor Oak and the Elite Council have become less active. She gives the player five Poké Balls and offers to give them a capture tutorial before leaving, saying that she'll see them soon to check up on their Pokédex.

On subsequent visits, when spoken to, Professor Redwood will ask how many Gym Badges the player has obtained. He will reward them with four different prizes based on the total number of Gym Leaders that they have defeated (excluding Jasper). He will also express concern about the Bandit Squad and their whereabouts. After the player enters the Hall of Fame, they may battle the Professor on a daily basis.

Aldew Police StationEdit

The Aldew Police Station is located in the northeastern portion of the town, and serves as the main base of operations for the Aldew Police. The first time that the player visits it, nothing notable occurs. Later in the game, when they need to unlock the door to Mt. Mitient on the roof of the Twilit Pillar, they must return here with the Bug Statuette, Tesla CoilSr/Shadow StoneSs or Detonator in order to obtain finger prints of Bardo, Brisa or Blaise.

Paper MillEdit

In the southeastern portion of the town is a fairly small paper mill that runs on the movement of a river flowing next to it. It produces a lot of paper every day from the wood that local people produce, which is then shipped off to various locations across Rinto and the Pokémon world. The player is never required to visit it, as it serves no other purpose.

Historian's HouseEdit

The house in the far southwest of the town is home to a historian who tells the player a random piece of information about the town's past each day. There are five different things he may say:

"This town was founded many years ago by a group of settlers who abandoned their old home."
"Apparently, this town was the favorite picnic spot of a medieval queen."
"It would seem that this town has been destroyed several times in the past by floods."
"This town has supposedly been called Verdelia Village and Haymoore Town in the past."
"According to legend, a rift in time and space is located near this town."

OriginEdit

Aldew Town is based on Maidstone, a town in southeastern England. Maidstone is close to the Thames Estuary, much like how Aldew Town is close to the Thane Estuary. Furthermore, like Aldew Town, Maidstone contains a lot of water and rivers, and has a significant paper and newspaper production industry. The Paper Mill in Aldew Town is based on the paper recycling factory in Aylesford, Maidstone, which is the largest of its kind in Europe and manufactures newsprint for the newspaper industry.

TriviaEdit

  • Aldew Town is one of the three settlements in the core series Pokémon games to contain tall grass, the other two being Castelia City and White Forest, both located in Unova.
  • A Lass in the Paper Mill mentions that the paper produced in Aldew Town is of such a high-quality that it's shipped off to distant locations such as Solaceon Town in Sinnoh. This is a reference to the Pokémon News Press.
