Location of Trainer Academy in Rinto.

The Trainer Academy (Japanese: トレーナーアカデミー Trainer Academy) is a school that focuses on the education of young Pokémon Trainers situated north of Route 5 in Rinto. It consists of a large main building, where most classes are held, three smaller buildings that serve other purposes, and a courtyard where students can relax. The player in Sunrise and Sunset was educated here, alongside their childhood friend AmeliaM/CameronF. It only accepts Trainers who show good potential.

GeographyEdit

The Trainer Academy, like most areas in East Rinto, is surrounded by trees and home to an array of greenery and plants. Rather than having walls, its courtyard is enclosed by trees growing closely together. The majority of the land is flat, with the exception of the small slope on the opposite side of the road stretching past the academy's front entrance.

HistoryEdit

The Trainer Academy was founded by Durrel West 120 years before the events of Sunrise and Sunset, and was intended to be a place where all aspiring Trainers could learn how to become Elite Trainers. Throughout its long history, it has had a total of eight headteachers, and has had over 2000 students. While the interior of the main building has changed significantly, the exterior has remained exactly the same. The cafeteria, battle annex an dormitory were all constructed under the command of the most recent headmistress, Cynthia.

Contemporary historyEdit

Pokémon Sunrise and SunsetEdit

The player visits the Trainer Academy at the very beginning of the game, alongside their best friend, AmeliaM/CameronF, and Professor Redwood, in order to attend their graduation ceremony. They are scheduled to receive a Pokémon, and have a choice out of Leachop, Pyrup and Bublé. However, after they obtain their starter Pokémon, the school is attacked by the Bandit Squad, who managed to steal one of the remaining Pokémon before they make their escape. Disheartened, the player returns home to Minton Town while Cynthia contacts the Dewdrop Police.

The player revisits the Trainer Academy after defeating the Capeta Gym and begin their journey to Vaultair City. They meet up with former student, Axel, who has been inspired by Cynthia to take up battling again, now that the player has begun collecting Gym Badges. After a battle, the player's new rival leaves to challenge the Gym Leaders of the Rinto League. Cynthia then encourages the player to do their best now that the Elite Council has become less oppressive.

The player's final required visit to the Trainer Academy occurs after they defeat the Council, and are attempting to breach the Bandit's Hideout. They must return to the Academy so that they can track down the disguised Bandit Squad member who helped with the Pokémon theft during the graduation ceremony.

Places of interestEdit

The main building is where most of the academy's lessons take place. The lobby is overseen by the receptionist, Christine, who used to work at the Nacrene Gym in Unova. There are several classrooms in the main building, each home to a different teacher. The most notable feature of the main building is the main hall, where assemblies and other important events are held. It is here that the graduation ceremony is held.

The courtyard is a small relaxation area between the Academy's four buildings. The only truly notable thing here is the battlefield, where the students have practice battles with each other in their spare time. The player can return here once a day to face off against a different Trainer.

The dormitory is where the students and teachers sleep. It isn't home to anything notable except for a few items. The teachers' rooms and the rooms belonging to the opposite gender of the player are out of bounds and cannot be visited. The cafeteria consists of a large hall and several tables for the students to eat at, and like the dormitory, serves no real purpose other than to house a few items.

Battle AnnexEdit

Main article: Battle Annex

The Battle Annex is a battle facility designed by Cynthia. It is similar to the Battle Institutes in Nimbasa City and Lumiose City in the sense that it is used by students to test and evaluate their battling skills. The player's best rank will be displayed on the computer in the building's lobby. In addition, the player can choose to take the Battle Challenge, in which they must battle other students consecutively. There are ten ranks which can be challenged, which become progressively more difficult. The first is free for anybody to challenge, the following eight require certain Gym Badges, and the final one requires the player to be an Elite Trainer. The trainers vary from School Kids in the lower levels to Teachers in the higher ones. The very last Trainer to be faced is Cynthia herself, and the reward for defeating her is one of starter Pokémon that the player didn't choose at the beginning of the game.
